In this Year of Mercy, our Holy Father has emphasized the importance of Pilgrimage, particularly to pass through the Holy Doors at Cathedrals around the world. A plenary indulgence* is available for pilgrims, given all requirements are met. In the Diocese of Phoenix, the Cathedral of SS. Simon & Jude welcomes the faithful to come and pass through the Holy Doors of Mercy, located in the center of the vestibule and marked by green leafy garland.
Pilgrims are welcome to participate in any of the regular daily liturgies and for Sunday Mass. Confession times** are offered several times during the week, allowing pilgrims to fulfill the requirements to obtain the plenary indulgence associated with the Year of Mercy.
Parishes are invited to bring a group of parishioners to make a pilgrimage together. Please call the Cathedral Office at 602-242-1300 to make arrangements for the group.
Visits and Cathedral tours may be arranged at other times as well. Please Call the Cathedral Office to schedule your visit.
“To experience and obtain the Indulgence, the faithful are called to make a brief pilgrimage to the Holy Door, open in every Cathedral or in the churches designated by the Diocesan Bishop, and in the four Papal Basilicas in Rome, as a sign of the deep desire for true conversion.”
A plenary indulgence requires that the individual:
Pass through the Holy Doors of Mercy
Be in a state of grace
Have complete detachment from sin
One plenary indulgence per day may be gained by an individual, which they can use for themselves or apply to a soul in purgatory. The indulgence remits the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven.
